Clinical Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of these stabilizing muscles (core stability) as well as improving posture, strength, and flexibility.
Pilates can also be used for general fitness and health as Studio 4 uses machine based pilates to achieve goals for its clients such as:
- Specific flexibility or strengthening target areas
- Specific lifestyle demands eg. for work, sport, baby-tasks, lifting and carrying, travelling
- Rehabilitating an injury (in liaison with your health professional where necessary)
- Chronic condition management
- Osteoporosis prevention and management
- Maintain strength and posture as you age
- Improving balance
- Improving sports performance
- Dance conditioning, general or specific such as improving turnout or preparing for pointe
German-born Joseph Pilates began developing his method in the early part of last century, opening his first studio in New York in the 1920s. His ideas about the body and the way it moves came from various influences, including martial arts, yoga, physical culture, boxing, gymnastics and later on, dance.
He had an exceptional understanding of anatomy, and his methods encompassed ideas about living a healthy lifestyle, many of which we take for granted today.
Over the years, variations have evolved in the method as it has been passed down from his original students and teachers. Modern sciences have informed the method, making today’s practice safe, effective and applicable to today’s needs, such as ‘computer posture’ and health issues related to inactivity.
It is the perfect form of physical activity for those who are inactive, to commence a lifestyle change to those who are elite athletes to enhance their performance.
